THANJAVUR PAINTINGS

    Filter
Thanjavur or Tanjore Paintings are known as palagai padam – meaning “picture on a wooden plank” – as they are typically completed on boards made from jackfruit or teak wood.
Originally, the artisans made Tanjore paintings with diamonds, sapphires and other jewels but due to exponential rise in the cost, the present day paintings are made of semi-precious stones and a 22-carat gold leaf. One painting needs the efforts of different skills of an artisan and may take weeks and months to create an exquisite Tanjore Painting which is a classical artform from Thanjavur a city in Tamil Nadu from southern India.
